In the cruel struggle of China for getting rid of the miserable semicolony fate, the Communist Party of China (CPC) smashed the most powerful and atrocious imperialist forces in the world. Owen Lattimore said that “The Communist Party of China, taking Japanese and American armies as knife grinder, has forged a brand-new art of people’s war and opened a new chapter in the human war history”.
At the beginning of the 20th century, countries having “exterritoriality” in China included Brazil, Peru and Bolivia, apart from the so-called “Eight-Power Allied Forces”; in the early days of the founding of New China, it was one of the most impoverished and backward countries in the world (ranking 134th in the world concerning GDP per capita), the infant mortality was as high as 200‰, the average lifespan was approximately 35 years old, and the adult illiteracy rate reached up to 80%; in the early 1950s immediately after the CPC took over China, the industrial capacity of this country was less than half of that of Belgium, a small country in Europe.
Today, China has become the second economy in the world, and its economic aggregate in real terms will surpass that of the U.S. in 2016, making it the largest economic power around the world.
Even those who continually accuse the CPC of “tyranny” are actually beneficiaries of the achievements made by the CPC through the struggle over 90 years, but such people, while enjoying the permanent peace and sustainable development, ingloriously make use of the peace and development created with the blood of thousands on thousands of the Chinese Communists and also the humility and modesty of the Chinese Communists.
It is an unrealistic hope that the CPC, consisting of more than 70 million members, maintains 100% purity; nevertheless, everyone holding no prejudice has to admit that the most excellent members of the Chinese nation are centralized in the CPC, right under the sickle-axe flag of the Party.
Although the CPC repeatedly emphasizes that its struggle progress is the history of never uncompromising fighting against its own mistakes and errors, as well as opportunists and corruption forces sneaking into the Party, and, instead of concealing mistakes it has made, declares that it will assume responsibility for the mistakes all the time and always take warning from them, the fact is that the CPC is the creator of the greatest miracles in man’s world in the 20th century, and these miracles were all created in the historical impasses making them “almost impossible”.
As said by Maurice Meisner, in that age when “power is right”, the CPC was confronted with opponents a hundred times stronger than it, whereas what it defeated were exactly such opponents; throughout the most progress of the People’s Republic of China, what the CPC had faced was the worst international quarantine, nevertheless, China was the country achieving the rapidest modernization around the world during 26 years from 1952 to 1978, with national income (calculated at constant price) increased by 4 times; from 1952 to 1972, its economic growth rate every decade reached 64.5%, vastly exceeding the growth rates of Germany, Japan and the Soviet Union, respectively, at their development peaks.
It is revealed by the study of famous Indian economist Amartya Sen that the international quarantine and pressure experienced by New China was much greater than that encountered by India, which was founded as an independent country almost at the same time, but it was exactly such a complex and dangerous situation that built up the CPC’s more tenacious viability and capabilities to tackle the crises and overcome difficulties. In the time period mentioned above (1952 – 1978), the dead population of China was 100 million less than that of India, which, however, was just one of the many miracles created by the CPC.
